The programme can be a very good starting point for a wide range of professional fields: Science administration (eg. SNSF, universities and similar institutions), science policy (eg. parties, parliamentary commissions, NGOs), public knowledge transfer (eg. museums, media), management and administration of industrial research, consulting and public relations, or a scientific career (doctorate and subsequent qualification).

The MA HPK master's program enabled me to specialize in biomedical ethics despite having other previous knowledge. The step-by-step structure allowed me to move from the general to the specific and to choose a focus that I could expand on up to my master's thesis. As a master's student at D-GESS, I also benefited from the ETH institution, its course offerings and extracurricular activities. I therefore recommend the MAGPW to all those who value interdisciplinarity and want to delve into unfamiliar subject areas.

The MA HPK master's degree program enabled me to pursue the questions raised in the bachelor's degree in environmental sciences on a historical and philosophical level. How far can scientific knowledge help us solve environmental problems? To what extent should other forms of knowledge be included? The great freedom of choice and the focus of the Master on forms of knowledge and knowledge acquisition proved to be a winning combination. The numerous essays that are written during the course of the course train independent thinking and writing; both important skills even outside of the academy.

The master’s program “History and Philosophy of Knowledge” benefited me in two particular ways. On the one hand, the wide range of courses provided a good basis for a comprehensive scientific understanding of historical, philosophical and cultural studies subjects. On the other hand, I was able to expand and deepen my own subject areas at the interface between philosophy and technology and benefited from the interdisciplinarity at ETH.
